[TSL] 'Sylvia' -- Harwich -- 1823
Carlton Blaxill <carlton@blax.demon.co.uk> on 12/31/1997

Dear All,

In my family history research I came across an interesting coroners inquest report about one of my ancestors.

The body of John Blaxcell was washed up on the beach at Walton, Suffolk on 23rd May 1823. The inquest took place the next day at the Ferry House Inn at Walton. The inquest reports that on returning from shore leave in a small boat on the night of 23rd January 1823, the boat was upset and he was drowned. The inquest reports the boat he was serving on as the 'Sylvia' a preventive cutter ? docked at Harwich, Essex.

I have checked the Ship lists in the Suffolk Record office but the 'Sylvia' does not appear to be listed.

Does anyone have any info. on this boat ? home port etc. What was a preventive cutter ? Is there likely to be any crew lists ?

Many thanks in advance.

Carlton Blaxill.
