Ahoy Shipmates!

More notes from Ellen Naliboff <enaliboff@home.com>, who has given her
permission for the following to be posted here, and which will be appearing

Thanks again Ellen!

An extraordinary part of the famine immigration to Canada concerns the fate of nearly 1,000 orphans. There still exists listS made by the Catholic and Protestant church authorities for Quebec and Montreal.

The list preserved by the Gray Nuns of Quebec gives the names of the orphans, ages, names of both parents, parish and county of origin, the name of the ship in which they sailed, and the name of their adoptor. Some notations, made in the 1860s, record marriages or ordinations of charges of the orphange.

At the unveiling of the memorial in the shape of a Celtic cross, with inscriptions in Irish, English, and French, in 1909, many French-speaking Canadians said "I was taken as a nameless child and given to a family who did not let me forget that I was Irish."

Some of the names and counties of orphans adopted in the summer of 1847 were
DORION of Donegal, DOYLE of Carlow, EGAN and FEENEY of Roscommon, FINNERTY of
Galway, FITZGERALD of Kerry, FITZPATRICK of Kilkenny, FLYNN of Sligo, HYNES
of Mayo, KENNEDY of Tipperary and Clare, NOONAN of Westmeath, NUNN of
Wexford, RYAN of Tipperary, Galway and Leitrim.
