[TSL] Carstairs Family Mystery Solved - Thanks To Everybody!
"Graeme Owen" <graemeo@netspace.net.au> on 02/01/2010

Hello All,

I've finally solved the mystery surrounding how William Carstairs and his
family arrived in Victoria.

A big 'THANK YOU' to all those who provided thoughts and advice!

The Carstairs family (John, Agnes and four children John(16), Margaret(12)
William(10) & Cecilia(4) travelled from Scotland to Liverpool in late 1857
and boarded sailing ship 'INVINCIBLE' on 5th October bound for Melbourne.
They arrived 23rd December. (No doubt the best Christmas present they could
ever experience - feet on terra-firma!)

On the ships Passenger List their name was entered as CARELAVIS !? (Figure
that one out!) Any wonder a novice like me was stumped!

Agnes was 'very' pregnant when they sailed and a son was born at sea.

His 'At Sea Birth' documentation gives his name as Henry Johnston Carstairs
- Father, Henry Johnston !? (Henry Johnston was in fact the captain of
'Invincible). When this son died 25 years later his name on the Death
Certificate was DAVID CARSTAIRS. (Obviously his father wasn't keen on the
idea of the captain being named as the baby's father (?!), and being named
after him! - This was another curve ball aimed at an inexperienced family
researcher trying to approach things logically!

A visit to Victoria's Public Records Office and some helpful comments from
you guys has got me over the line. Once again thank you all.

I'm now keen to find out more about the ship 'INVINCIBLE' (does it ever
end?)

If anyone has knowledge of this ship, pictures etc I'd love to hear about
it.

Cheers

Graeme Owen
