[TSL] William Gillesby to Savannah
"virginia miller" <vjmill@telus.net> on 01/11/2010

The monumental inscription for my 4th great grandfather, William Gillesby(Gillespie,Gillespy, Glaspy) states that he died Sept 3, 1823 in Charleston, South Carolina. He was a Quaker by religion and a miller by occupation. He was born in Cumberland, England in 1764, and at the time of his death his wife, 9 adult children and many grandchildren still lived in England. In 1892, the Carlisle Patriot printed a letter from William Whittaker, a grandson of William Gillesby. The letter says that "William Gillespie was the first man booked to Savannah, North Carolina the first year the canal was opened, above 70 years ago".
I found a 1784 record for a William Gillespy for 200 acres on Canoe Fork on the Savannah River. Possibly my William.

On Ancestry I found a record for Wm. Gillespy born about 1764 arriving in Savannah in 1823. This is from the Passenger and Immigration Lists Index. There is no further information.
My question is would there be any further passenger information for William? Also, what might have been his reason to go to the Southern States?
Thanks,
Virginia
