[TSL] Greek Ships or Shipping Companies
jpipich@juno.com (Joan M. Pipich) on 12/31/1997

My grandfather was born in 1859 on the Isle of Kythera, Greece.
Published information regarding him states that he sailed the seas for 22
years before coming to the US via South America in 1890. My calculations
of his age shows that he went to sea as a very young boy, only 9-10 years
old, and I have been told that this is not uncommon for Greek boys. When
he arrived in US, he spoke fluent English in addition to seven other
languages. He died when I was an infant and little information is in the
family notes. I got the above information in a copy of the History of
Pittsburgh and Its Environs, by Fleming. (the city in which he settled).

Does anyone have any information or records on Greek ships? Or shipping
companies? Or the port you would enter if you came from South America?

Would this information be on his Naturalization Record? He married my
grandmother who was a U.S. citizen and I do not know whether that would
automatically make him a U.S. citizen. They married in 1896 and I have
yet to find his naturalization record. BTW: His name was George
Nicholas STRATIGOS.

Thanks to anyone who can provide any information.

Joan
