Hi Carlton

Your ancestor was a member of the Coastguard service - a year before he drowned, there was an amalgamation of three of the services which existed in British coastal regions for the prevention of smuggling and the evasion of excise duty, and the Coastguard was formed. They needed many fast cutters for intercepting possible smuggling and the Sylvia was almost certainly one of these.

Records for Coastguards could be in Admiralty records or in Board of Customs records. Some Parliamentary papers give information also. You will find all these records in the Public Record Office in Kew, England. With luck on your side you may be able to extract his full service record. Certainly you should find musters (which were lists of men serving - no 'crew agreements' as such on Admiralty ships).

The records relating to Coastguards are not the easiest in the world - they are muddled and books numbered in sequence may not be chronological so beware when searching. But with the name of the ship, you stand an excellent chance of turning him up. Descriptions of these preventive cutters will also be available at Kew - I think from your email address you may well be within reach of the PRO. Their web page is at

If you need any more help, do email me direct. Happy hunting!
