Hello Listers
A rellie of mine, John McCALL, arrived in Victoria, Australia on
the "Empire of Peace" in May 1860. As the arrival was listed in the Shipping
Intelligence of the "Argus" on 2nd May, it must have arrived on 1st May.
I have this info from the "Argus": Empire of Peace, ship, 1,540
tons,T. Calvert, from Liverpool 28th December. Passengers-cabin : Rev. James
Reid, Rev. J. Henderson, Mr. F. Hankey ; and 108 in the intermediate and
steerage. Swire Brothers, agents.". The abovenamed John McCALL was most
likely steeerage even though he was an unassisted immigrant. His wife and
family followed the following year.
My questions -
1) Is the above info from the "Argus" correct?
2) As John McCALL was Scottish, could the "Empire of Peace' have
started in, say, Glasgow, calling in later at Liverpool?
Or would JMc have had to travel south to Liverpool to board?
Any info about this voyage gratefully received.
Many thanks.
Cheers
Pam
