the index's are filmed vols. done by WPA...some are alphabetical, others are soundex...they typically show an arrival date and ship-name and some other ref info so you can find the orig list the name was taken from....
these index's are fairly straightforward, but not so for the films of the pass.lists ...they are a maze of paperwork...insurance, cargo, inspection reports....and on and on....somewhere in the mess is your pass.list...all of the arrival papers are arranged by date so you need the index's to know which date to look for......once knowing the date you get the film for that date...then you look for the ship....there are 50-100 ships per day....when you've located the correct ship section you begin looking at all the paperwork trying to find the pass.list among all the other mundane lists....

don't even =think= about going thru a month's or even one week of films...there's way too much to look at and you get eyeball-itis pretty quick....

> I presume, for me, the best place to see them would be at Laguna Niguel or San Bruno? Right?

yes, if they have them...there's a web site that shows the holdings of each nara center....tho a phone call might be easier....:) or, you can get both the index's and the pass.listfilms thru LDS or AGLL....

AGLL is a pretty good option cuz they will mail the films (typ. $3 ea.) to your home for hand-carry to your local library machine...my town lib. has two reader/printers and nobody ever uses them except me....:)
