But he's there as a crew member!
So worth looking at the actual image which should state age and nationality.
Plus search for the crew agreement which may be held by The National
Maritime Museum in Greenwich England.

Although Cairngorm 1853 is not listed on Miramar index there is a
description of her at

http://www.bruzelius.info/Nautica/Ships/Clippers/Cairngorm(1853).html
Including
1860 April Sailed from London for Sydney on charter to the Black Ball Line

A picture of the builders model is at
http://landandseacollection.com/id292.html

There are more websites with information about this ship so google 'clipper
cairngorm' and take a look

I have not found her 'official number' so could not check if the crew
agreement is held in New Foundland see http://www.mun.ca/mha/

Good luck ... The answer to your original question is he was on his own
..but what a ship to sail on...enjoy the research
