 Might it have been whaling?  There are 20 references to Swains in the
"Index to captains and logkeepers" section of  "American whalers and traders
in the Pacific: a guide to records on microfilm" (R.Langdon, ed. Canberra,
ANU Pacific Manuscripts Bureau , 1978).   You should be able to consult this
via several US libraries who are   listed as members  of  the Pacific
Manuscripts Bureau in its webpage at
