To Chris Yuristy
Chris - my husband's grandparents, named Bezkorowayny, came from (we
think) Uwysla in April 1902, on the SS Lake Manitoba. They came via
Liverpool - we don't know how they got to Liverpool, but doing it this
way is called the "Indirect Route" and was cheaper than the "Direct
Route" (say, from Hamburg or Bremen direct to Canada). They came to
Quebec City, and then took the Immigrant train to Winnipeg. The ship
also stopped at Halifax, where some passengers bound for the USA got
off, and others in Quebec. We went to the Winnipeg Government
Archives, and asked to look at the film for passengers (Immigrants) to
Canada in 1902. The first ship we looked at had them on it.
Are there any heritage books about the place ;your people lived in
Saskatchewan?? Does it mention where any of these people came from?
It is a good bet that more than one family travelled to an area.
Sometimes it mentions how they came, and possibly when (spring,
summer, Fall) which will give you someplace to start.
We found Uwysla through Allan Szuch, he posted names of soldiers who
had died or went missing from WW2. For Uwysla, the names that rang a
bell were Mostovy (a cousin to Bezkorowayny), and Bezkorowayny, and
Klym, who settled on the quarter section right next to Bezkorowayny's,
and was on the same boat as they. We originally thought the family
came from Kopychentsi, because a large number of settlers in the area
came from that town. As it turns out, Uwysla is about 6km from
Kopychentsi, so we are now waiting to order in the film for Chorostkow
(which includes Uwysla) from the LDS. They close for the entire month
of December, and they won't let me order it, even on the last day of
November. Now I have to wait till Jan 4 to order it, and then 6 weeks
till it comes in.
If you mail me direct with the name, I can look up on the passenger
list for the SS Lake Manitoba, departed Liverpool 24 April, 1902.
