Re: [TSL] coming from NFLD

Hi Heather,

I notice that your email hasn't been answered yet, so I'll take a crack at it.

As you undoubtedly know, but some other listers may not, Newfoundland did
not become part of Canada until 1949. From 1906, Canada began to archive
passenger records of ferry arrivals from Newfoundland to North Sydney,
Nova Scotia , from which place they would proceed by rail. Those are
available through to end 1935 which is the limit for publically available
passenger records for Canada (for privacy reasons <sigh>) The National
Library & Archives, Canada, has those online images available until the
date 1912 (so far).

To date, online Halifax records are available through 1922, but many
vessels originating at a British port destined to Halifax used St. John's
as a way-port so quite a few Newfoundlanders embarked for Canada on those
vessels too.
The east coast Canadian records are unindexed on the National website,
however, Ancestry does have them indexed ... you didn't mention the surname
&c. but as a trial I checked the surname Brow and saw an adult male and two
boys (initials only, not together) returning to Canada after visiting
Newfoundland over the 1911-1912 time frame, but their residence was PEI.

The available records are indeed ferry records, but as Newfoundland was not
part of Canada at that time, they do contain a little more information than
you might expect.

Sue
