A few comments on the war loss rate for tramp / cargo steamers.
The convoy system was not instituted until 1917 in World War I after Germany
instituted a system on unrestricted submarine warfare, sinking ships
without
warning.. In WW11 most ships sailed in convoy from the beginning. The main
exception being fast passenger ships which were mostly used for trooping
and
often sailed with just a naval escort. They were fast enough to outrun a
U-Boat. Tramp steamers were slow and became easy pickings for U-Boats.
The loss rate among British merchant seamen was the highest of any
service -
approximately one in three seamen were lost in WWII, often dying of
exposure
after days or weeks in appalling conditions in open lifeboats
Lest we forget
