The SS GREAT BRITAIN as built by Brunel was not launched until 1843.
She initially did runs to New York, before the Australian ( and Crimean
and Indian Mutiny) service . After that, she did more trips to San
Francisco, before being wrecked off the Horn in 1886 and making it to
the Falkland Islands, where she was condemned and stayed until 1970. She
was then salvaged & towed back to Bristol on a pontoon, to the same dock
she was built in.
There was discussion and information on this ship in newsgroup:
soc.genealogy.australia+nz . Search in Deja Vu ,and for 'great britain'.
I have a lot more information on this ship, should any one want it,
including the 'RULES FOR PASSENGERS' as laid down in 1849. Will post to
list if Listowner agreeable??? Let me know.
Cheers,
Anne
