Hi Johno.

Further information on Taroona .Left Glasgow on delivery voyage to Melbourne
on January 26 1936 and made her maiden voyage on the Melbourne - Launceston
run on March 12 of that year.  may of the same year she was badly damaged by
fire in first class accomodation and was out of service for several months.
Requisitioned as troopship by Aus Gov't on March 12 1942 .  Top of after
funnel was removed.  March 26. went aground on nateara Reef, leaving Port
Moresby and remained fast for three days. During this period japanese
bombers made several raids on the port but failed to notice Taroona.  In
February 1946 she was paid off refitted , her aft funnel was removed and the
fore one was heightened. She then returned to Bass Strait service until 1959
when Tasmanian Steamers Pty Ltd closed their service.   Sold to Typaldos
Bros, Greece for Mediterranean service she was renamed  Hellas, refitted at
Piraeus , her superstructure was extended aft for service between
Venice-Brindisi-Piraeus-Istanbul . She was broken up by Turkish shipbreakers
in April 1989.

Cheers
Martin Navarro. Perth.
