[TSL] 1 April 1878 UK to US

I have been searching for a ship from Scotland to the US, arriving New
York (?) on 1 April 1878. There are several on the Ships List, but none
that carried John P. Rankin, or his wife Margaret on the same route in
July. Family lore sez he came on the White Star, but replies say it
couldn't have been on the White Star ship, but perhaps a ship on the
White Star Line. Does anyone have an answer?
